Obi Toppin became the first player from Dayton to win the Wooden Award and the first from the Atlantic-10 Conference since Jameer Nelson (St. Joseph’s) won in 2004. He was the only player in the country who averaged 20.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and shot 60% from the field, while being in the top-5 nationally in field goal percentage. He led the nation in dunks with a school-record 107 and his 190 career dunks are also a Dayton record Toppin beat out Iowa star Luka Garza to win the award after leading Dayton to a 29-2 record during the 2019-20 season, which ended abruptly prior to the NCAA tournament due to COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. Toppin recorded 20.0 points per game, 7.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks while connecting on nearly 70% of his shots inside the 3-point line, he also made 39% of his shots from beyond the arc.
