Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts based on their performances during the 2021-22 season thus far, the list comprises of 25 student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport’s most prestigious honor.

LOS ANGELES, CA (October 5, 2021) – Rick Byrd will receive the John R. Wooden Award “Legends of Coaching” honor in 2022. Coach Wooden’s grandson-in-law Craig Impelman and 2021 recipient Dave Yanai were proud to announce his selection at the Los Angeles Athletic Club’s annual Wooden Award Tip-Off Luncheon. The event featured the head coaches from the Division I men’s basketball programs in Southern California. The “Legends of Coaching” honor recognizes coaches who exemplify Coach Wooden’s high standard of coaching success and personal integrity.

The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced that Luka Garza of the University of Iowa is the winner of the 2021 John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy’s as the most outstanding player in men’s college basketball. The announcement was made during ESPN SportsCenter.

The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced the 2021 John R. Wooden Award® Presented by Wendy’s® All American Team™ on ESPNU today. The Wooden Award All American Team is comprised of ten student athletes who were the top vote-getters in the quest to earn college basketball’s most prestigious honor. The ten-player team, alphabetically, consists of: Jared Butler (Baylor), Kofi Cockburn (Illinois), Cade Cunningham (Oklahoma State), Hunter Dickinson (Michigan), Ayo Dosunmu (Illinois), Luka Garza (Iowa), Corey Kispert (Gonzaga), Evan Mobley (USC), Jalen Suggs (Gonzaga), and Drew Timme (Gonzaga). Gonzaga becomes the first school in the Award’s history to have  three players named to the ten-man Wooden Award All American Team. The five finalists for the 2021 John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy’s Men’s Player of the Year are: Butler, Cunningham, Dosunmu, Garza, and Kispert.

Selected by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board, the National Ballot consists of 15 student-athletes who are candidates for the Wooden Award All American Team and Wooden Award Trophy as the most outstanding college basketball player in the United States.
